Disagreeing With the Majority

I'm sure you've all had moments where your opinion of a movie is so different from that of most other critics. You may love a movie that most people hated or hate a movie that most people loved. So to liven things up around here, I got two questions.

1. What is it like for you to have a dramatically different opinion about a movie compared with most other critics? How brave are you in reviewing such a movie?
2. Name at least five movies where your opinion was part of the minority, whether or not you've written a review for it.

1. It's not so much if I go against the grain of critical opinion that I'm worried. I'm only marginally a part of the critical community so it's not like I have other critics to worry about. I only get concerned (to a moderate degree) of what my family/friends would say. I've already been informed by my teenage sister, mother, fiancee, and fiancee's best friend that there might be repercussions should I give "Twilight" a bad review.

2. I tend to go against standard critical opinion in a few different genres and I'll provide examples:
A) I'm a staunch defender of the "Jackass" films.
B) I'm a staunch defender of so called "horror porn" films like "Saw" and "Hostel."
C) More recently I trumpeted "Blindness" while other critics had serious problems with it.
D) I gave "Disaster Movie" a much more positive review than most critics did.
E) On the flip side (movies embraced by most but hated by me) I gave "Choke" a bad review. I also really didn't like "Beowulf."
F) As far as directors go that most critics like I have yet to really get into either Robert Altman or Ridley Scott.

I used to be timid about going against the movie critic majority, but as time goes along, I gradually care less.

Here are some examples of where my opinion might surprise you:

1. "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" - The production is great, but where's the plot?
2. "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" - The average user rating on IMDb for this movie with rapper 50 cent is pretty low at 3 to 4. Some critics may not like it either. But I surprisingly enjoyed it as a gritty gangster drama.
3. "The Big Lebowski" - Some say it's a comedy classic, but I thought it was just pretty funny and nothing more.
4. "TMNT" - The computer-animated Ninja Turtle was dismissed by many, but it's still better than the live-action series from the 90s (OK, I was a Turtle fan as a kid, too).
5. "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein" were good movies, but I'm not sure about the greatest comedies (though the last ten minutes of "Blazing Saddles" were absolutely hysterical)

You know, all of this reminds me of the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine is the only person who dislikes the movie "The English Patient." An interesting reminder that opinions vary widely. :-)
