As usual, David, interesting review. I, too, have been fascinated by films of late that do a good job combining gross-out humor with a touch of heart, such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, and even Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It sounds like Zack and Miri would be another fine addition to this line.
I also like what you said about Kevin Smith. First off, I forgot that he directed Zack and Miri, mainly because of the association between Smith and his Viewaskewniverse. If you say he definitely breaks away from his usual brand, then that's another reason to see Zack and Miri.
Maybe I will check it out soon. I don't know when, if I do, mainly because I'm anticipating the next big movie to see: Quantum of Solace. I'm sure you'll be reviewing that one, David. If you are, I'll be joining you with my review of it around the same time. :-)
1. "Zack and Miri" certainly does fit into the Apatow line of gross out meets thoughtful romantic comedy.
2. He breaks from his usual brand in that it doesn't take place in New Jersey or the View Askewniverse. It's still very much a Smith film, though, in its style, dialogue, subject matter, actors, etc. In fact it could very well have been a Viewaskewniverse film. Make the exact same film except throw Jay and Silent Bob in, reference the other films, and set it in New Jersey. I'm glad he didn't, though.
3. I haven't been super excited about the next Bond film. I wasn't overly impressed by Casino Royale and don't particularly care for the new Bond. We'll see, though.
Quantum of Solace already premiered in London, and while I didn't read any reviews, I heard of the overall impression by many: it may not be as good as prior films and is, in fact, only 1 hour 40 minutes long, shorter than the usual two-hour average running time for a Bond film.
Regardless, I look forward to reviewing it.
