Great review, David. We (my 13-yo son and I) just watched Hellboy the other day in preparation for this new movie. We liked it, but thought it was a little light in the way of plot. This new movie sounds much better and darker, and we're looking forward to seeing it. I've yet to see Pan's Labyrinth, so it sounds like Hellboy 2 gives a good indication of what that movie is like.
Hellboy 2 is vastly superior to the first Hellboy and I agree with you about the plot.
Do see Pan's Labyrinth. It's really one of those movies about which I wouldn't change a thing. It's just perfect and a real auteur film. Guillermo Del Toro's signature is just all over it.
